Day 6 - Saturday 9th September 2006

End location: Lake Myvatn (Northeast Iceland)

Route travelled: Clockwise from Lake Myvatn on Road 1 & Road 87 via Husavik then on Road 85 around the Tjornes peninsula. South on Road 864 for Dettifoss Waterfall & then back on Road 1 to head back to Lake Myvatn area.

Distance travelled: 483.3 km (includes distance travelled on 8th September also)

Accommodation: Hotel Reynihlid

Sites visited:
Husavik - translates to ‘House bay’ & named by the Swedish Viking, Gardar Svavarsson in AD850 after his mother had seen Iceland in a dream. The cross haped church in Husavik is counted as one of Iceland’s most attractive churches. It holds 450 people & when it was built in 1907, the population was only 500.
Asbyrgi - located in Jokulsargljufur National Park (glacial river canyon), Asbyrgi is one of the parks gems & is a great horse shoe canyon. The first Viking settlers thought that it had be formed by Sleipnir, the god Odin’s flying horse. A 330ft cliff face makes a 1km wide ring around lush greenery with smaller outcrops of cliffs, called Eyjan (islands) rises in the middle. Geologists claim that the canyon was created by a large glacial flow after a eruption under the icecap of Vatnajokull.
Dettifoss - Europe’s largest waterfall & took some effort to get to it (but worth it) bone rattling road for 26km. White dust clouds signal oncoming cars from several kilometres away & also can see the spray from the waterfall from 7km away. Had to scramble over & down blocks of grey lava & a single rope barrier at the edge of the ravine. 500 cubic meters fall over the ledges every second. Only 145ft high but an awesome spell binding sight.
Hverfjall - formed 2,500 years ago a steep path runs up the side of the crater which is made entirely of loose volcanic rubble (or tephra). The crater is 3,280ft wide & visitors have left messages in white rocks in the middle of the crater.

Trip notes: Where Jackie, Pete & I discovered we weren’t really stalking each other.
